Hi again!
Today I want to talk about the feminine image on social medias, specifically on Tiktok. Those trends are all over social medias but mostly start on Tiktok. You've all heard of the "girl dinner" sound, the "girl math" trend, the "hot girl walks", or the overall bimbo aesthetic. I've seen a lot of debates and discourse on that matter, and it made me think about it, and I pondered a lot on the subject. There's a lot of arguments on the "for" side and the "against" side, so I've checked both sides and I've come to the conclusion that I'm actually neutral. Let me develop.
Why I'm against the feminine image trends on social medias
-Glorification of sex work and abuse
A lot of the bimbo aesthetic can be harmful to women, especially younger girls who are more naive and prone to adopt everything online. Let me be clear, I am not against sex work. The thing is, the bimbo aesthetic makes young women want to do that job instead of their actual dream, because of what they saw online. But no one online shows the bad sides of it. Also, the "Lana Del Rey ultraviolence coquette" aesthetic glorifies abuse, with lyrics of her songs and people romanticizing having an abusing partner. This can be dangerous.
- Babyfication and childish trends
Some people take the feminine image trend too far, by impersonating a child or baby by being "feminine". Men see this representation of women as the best type of women, and it's harmful because it just leads to pedophile thinkig they're okay. Acting like a child is not okay, it sexualize kids.
- Diminish women and reduce them to a stereoytpe
The overall of the feminine image trends, calling something "girl" whatever, makes it look like girls cannot act like men or have and like the same things as them. It can be a fun way to relate to things, but it can also make women seem like they're not the equal to men and are all the same.
Why I'm for the feminine image trends on social medias
- Retaking the power and reclaiming the words used against us
By using those trends, we can reclaim the power of being feminine and a woman. Being feminine doesn't mean being weak. Being a women isn't bad. Calling each other "bitch" can become a fun word, that we reclaim after it has been used so badly over us forever.
- Girl power and having our own trends
With those trends, we can reclaim our girl power and show that we can have our own trend. We aren't dependant of men and have our own things.
-Gives an identity and a sense of community
Those trends makes women come together and feel like one. It gives us a sense of community, like we aren't alone, and can do anything when we're all together. It makes us feel like we're okay, because other people relate to the same things as us. We are women, we are a community and all have identies. We are women and can do anything.
That's my take on the feminine trends. I know I haven't posted in a while, but I got a job and had to write blog posts for the job so it made me unmotivated to write my own in my own time. But I am back!
With love,
